Maria Argyros
MARIA ARGYROS has performed over twenty operatic roles, such as Mimi in La Bohème, Gilda in Rigoletto, Pamina and First Lady in The Magic Flute, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Adina in The Elixir of Love, Micaela in Carmen, Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito, Nanetta in Falstaff, and the titles roles in Massenet’s Manon, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and Lully’s Alceste.
Miss Argyros has performed as soloist with The Little Orchestra Society, South Florida Symphony, Albany Pops Orchestra, Chappaqua Orchestral Assoc., Greater Utica Opera Guild, Schenectady Light Opera Company, Eastern Opera Theatre, Saratoga Friends of Musical Arts, Capital Hill Orchestra and Choral Society, Boston Chorus Pro Musica, Liederkranz Society, American Chamber Orchestra of NJ, Long Island Choral Society, and Northeast Harbor Arts Festival, among others.
Miss Argyros spent two summers at the Tanglewood Music Center, where she studied with Phyllis Curtin and performed in recital. Other teachers and coaches have included Boris Goldovsky, Nico Castel, Thomas Grubb, Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Janet Bookspan, Whitfield Lloyd, Dino Anagnost, Vincent LaSelva, and Ignace Strasfogel.
Besides earning a Bachelors degree from the Crane School of Music, SUNY, Potsdam, and a Masters degree from Emerson College in Boston, Miss Argyros has also earned post-graduate credits from Peabody Conservatory, NYU, Illinois State University, and Westminster Choir College where she studied vocal anatomy and pedagogy with Dr. Scott McCoy and Dr. Thomas Cleveland. Continuing her work in vocal pedagogy, Ms. Argyros studied with David Blair McClosky, a recognized authority and pioneer in the field of voice science and rehabilitation. She completed 120 hours of course work to become a Certified McClosky Voice Technician.
As a Master Teacher for the McClosky Institute of Voice, Maria teaches summer seminars offered nationwide by the Institute, and also teaches vocal anatomy and physiology and the McClosky techniques to other voice professionals. Miss Argyros has given several McClosky workshops and master classes, including for the New York City Board of Education, and The New York Singing Teachers’ Association, which was streamed nationally online. She earned the “Distinguished Voice Professional” diploma after completing the course of study offered by The New York Singing Teachers’ Association (NYSTA).
Miss Argyros was a referral voice teacher for the Grabscheid Voice Center at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, and was formally chair of the voice department of Turtle Bay Music School in Manhattan. She is currently a visiting Associate Professor of Voice at Hunter College, and adjunct Associate Professor of Voice at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College where she teaches applied voice, voice classes, and vocal pedagogy. She is a contributing author of two chapters and additional material to the augmented 5th Edition, published by Waveland Press, of Your Voice at Its Best, originally written by David Blair McClosky in 1959.
Miss Argyros maintains a private studio in New York City, and her students have performed professionally in regional opera (San Antonio Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, Sarasota Opera), cabaret, and musical theatre.
