Thea Everley

 

Thea earned her Bachelors of Music (Voice) at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music. She debuted as a lead in a well-known sarswela at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and went on to work with several established theatre companies, performing in Manila, touring nationally, and participating in the Asia Theatre Arts Festival in Tokyo. She was also a member of the internationally multi-awarded choir, the Philippine Madrigal Singers. She later won a scholarship to take Advanced Studies in Lyric Opera at the Accademia Internazionale Delle Arti in Rome. While there, she performed at the Centro Culturale Giovanni XXII and sang on the pilot of a new Italian TV show. She also performed with the city’s only English-speaking theatre company and was the assistant conductor of the Karilagan Choir, composed of overseas Filipino workers.

Her love for musical theatre then led her to move to London, where she completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Musical Theatre Performance and a Licentiate degree at the Royal Academy of Music. She played Masha in the UK tour of Bertolt Brecht's 'The Mother' and also appeared on primetime BBC TV. She was a participating artist in the development of a new work for the English National Opera and sang for benefit concerts for cancer victims and typhoon disasters in the Philippines. She originated the role of Nena in “The Ones We Left Behind”, a collection of plays about immigrants to the UK, and played Nenita in the Belgian mini-series ‘Eigen Kweek’ which won Best Drama in the 2014 Belgian TV Awards. She also continued to work in Asia, performing in hit musicals such as ‘Avenue Q’ (Mrs. Thistletwat/ Care Bear),‘Spelling Bee’ (Marcy Park), ‘Rock of Ages’ (Regina) and ‘Shrek’ (Sugarplum Fairy/ Gingy).

As a voice teacher, Thea has worked at the UP College of Music Extension Program and the Cultural Center of the Philippines where she developed a course integrating acting and singing. In the UK, she taught at the Anna Fiorentini School as well as Theatretrain. She was also the assistant vocal coach on ‘Avenue Q’ (Manila and Singapore) and ‘Shrek’ (Manila). Currently, she is a Drama teacher at the British International School in Manila, where she spearheaded the inclusion of the subject in the Primary School curriculum. She focuses on the use of voice in every year group that she teaches, integrating the McClosky technique into her work with students as well as in the professional development sessions she delivers to academic and administrative staff.
